What is Industrial Hygiene?

Industrial Hygiene as defined by the American Industrial Hygiene Association:  
A "science and art devoted to the recognition, evaluation and control of those environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace that may cause sickness, impaired health and well being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers or among the citizens of the community.

What are the common industrial hygiene problems?

bulletChemical hazards like mists, vapors from toxic solvents, dusts from asbestos and fumes from welding. 
bulletPhysical hazards like radiation, noise and heat stress.   
bulletErgonomic hazards like improper lifting.  Remember, back pain is a very common as well as costly injury.

What does "CIH" stand for?

It stands for Certified Industrial Hygienist.  It is a mark of professionalism conferred by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.  It is only for those individuals meeting extensive professional and educational requirements. All CIHs are bound by the Code of Ethics.

How to choose an industrial hygiene professional?

Compliance officers CANNOT make appointments for inspection unless in some extreme cases.   A compliance officer can show up at your office during your normal business hours.

What does the compliance officer do?

Compliance only.  Whenever a violation is first identified, a citation will be issued.  Sorry.  No second chance.  Depending on the violation, a citation may or may not have penalty.  The penalty can be as high as $70,000 per violation.

Can I tell the compliance officer to go away?

Yes.  You may tell the compliance officer to go away and refuse entry.  However, the compliance officer may come back with a search warrant later.
